Practice Structure Flashcards
what is mental practice?
cognitive rehearsal of task with absence of overt physical movement
goal of mental practice:
activate the same brain pathways used in physical execution
neural substrates of mental practice:
frontoparietal areas, posterior cerebellum, primary sensory and motor areas and anterior cerebellum
what is observational learning?
acquisition of information through observing skill
what are mirror neurons?
neurons that are used in physical movement are active during observation
demonstration factors:
invariant features of the movement: relative motion, critical pats of movement patterns and outcome of movement
what is practice?
search for optimal solutions to problem; developing new solutions by changing techniques during repetitions
performance vs learning:
performance is the aim to achieve maximal correctness in each trial (repetitive pattern) and learning is finding a better way to achieve the skill (temporary decreases in performance while learning)
what is practice dose?
effectiveness of practice; time, repetitions and perceived effort
practice conditions:
must be similar to performance conditions ex. use of mirrors in dance studio is counter intuitive
part vs whole practice:
part involves breakdown of skill and learning separately; whole is practicing entire skill
strategies of part practice:
fractionization (individual limbs), segmentation (first part then next) and simplification (easier variation of skill)
what is massed practice?
continuous practise with very little rest
what is distributed practice?
intermittent practice with lots of rest; more effective than massed practice
what is constant practice?
performing skill same way every time
