Q

What is our experimental hypothesis for this practical?

A

The participant group exposed to the leading question will have a significantly lower accuracy of recall of the Toy story robbery clip compared to the control group. This is a one tailed, directional hypothesis

Q

What is the null hypothesis for this practical?

A

There will be no significant difference in accuracy of recall between the experimental group (exposed to the leading question) and the control group (with only control questions) of the Toy Story robbery clip. Any difference will be due to chance factors.

Q

What kind of method did we use and explain why?

A

Experimental= independent to reduce risk of demand characteristics, order effects, and increase…..

Q

What is the IV in this experiment?

A

To show all ppts clip, but half will answer the leading questions and the other half will only answer the control questions

Q

Explain the standardised procedure used for this investigation

A

1) show all ppts the set of standardised instructions for the experimen, referring to the practical being done in silence and on your own
2) show all ppts the 3 min 48 second toy story 3 robbery clip
3) randomly, give half the ppts the control questions, and the other half the leading questions for them to answer, and then turn the wustions face down on the desk once completed
4) provide all ppts with a word search to complete in 5 minutes
5) give all ppts the set of control questions once more
6) provide a standardised debrief due to use of deception

Q

Explain 2 issues you encountered during the practical investigation that could have affected your findings.

A
  • toy Story clip used could’ve already been watched by the ppts= their accuracy of recall is likely to be higher= low internal validity due to not controlling for extraneous variables like this
  • 5 minutes to complete the word search was too much time for the ppts= gave them time afterwards to rehearse toy story clip + I,prove accuracy of recall

Q

Give 2 improvements that we could have made to our experiment

A

1) Change from opportunity to random sampling. We could do this by using a random number generator with every king Ed’s student name in it, and use every 10th name generated. This would improve our results as the sample is more representative of the wider population therefore findings are more easily generalised
2) Screen for sight and hearing impairments. We could do this by conducting a standardised sight test and hearing test, with anyone not passing, they wouldn’t be used in this study. This would improve our results because it would increase internal validity between the IV and DV, making the findings more trustworthy

Q

Give one strength and one weakness of the practical investigation

A

STRENGTH:
-High reliability= use of standardised procedures= strength because study can be replicated by other researchers and results can be compared, increasing external validity

WEAKNESS:
-low generalisability= small sample size + opportunity sampling technique= weakness as limits amount of data being collected + anomalies likely to impacts results
