Practical: Blood vessels I and II Flashcards
what organ is this?
aorta
what is the arrow seperating?
. The double-headed arrow marks the boundary between the tunica media and the tunica adventitia.
what is this a high power view of?
tunica media
what are the arrows pointing to?
A high power view of the tunica media. The arrow shows a layer of smooth muscle with nuclei cut in cross section.
what is this organ? what is used to stain this?
aorta
picro-orcein is used to stain the elastic fibers
what is this? what causes this?
an atherosclerotic plaque (arrow) in the intima. The elastic fibers are also unevenly distributed. Both features are age-related changes in the aorta wall.
what are these gaps in the media caused by?
gaps in the media that were filled with lipid or ground substance in life, another age-related change.
what is this slide of? what are the arrows pointing to?
The tunica media.
The elastic lamellae (arrows) are irregularly spaced and frayed (age-related change).
what organ is this?
IVC (know its a vein because its floppy)
what is this?
shows vasa vasorum (arrow) in the adventitia.
what organ is the arow pointing to?
a large vein (the renal vein).
the large vein
what is in the brackets?
longitudinal bundles of smooth muscle
what is this?
how do you know?
a large vein
- The intima is at the top.
- The media below the intima has only about 3 layers of smooth muscle.
- The adventitia contains numerous longitudinal bundles of smooth muscle.
- Bright pink collagen fibers are also seen.
what is indicated by the arrow?
the lumen of a coronary artery
