Practical 3 Exercise Prescriptions Flashcards
1
Q
acute stage timeframe
A
~1-6 days
2
Q
subacute stage timeframe
A
~7-21+ days
3
Q
criteria for initiating active exercises and stretching in subacute
A
- decreased swelling
- no constant pain
- pain not exacerbated by motion in available range
4
Q
acute stage interventions
A
- PRICE
- PROM
- muscle setting (isometrics)
- low dosage joint mobility
- massage
5
Q
early subacute stage interventions
A
- multi angle, submax isometrics
- AROM
- muscular endurance exercises
- protected WB exercises
- stretching
NOT!!!! ECCENTRICS OR HEAVY RESISTANCE EXERCISES
6
Q
chronic stage timeframe
A
- ~21 days to 18 months
7
Q
chronic stage interventions
A
- stretching (if limitation in muscle length)
- joint mobilization (if tightness persists in joint)
- strengthening in controlled manner (if strength limitation)
- return to high demand activities (sport or work training)
8
Q
PROM dosage
A
at least 5-10 reps, but generally greater than 10. slow, repetitive motion
9
Q
when should you use PROM?
A
- acute, inflamed tissue (inflammation usually lasts 2-6 days)
- pt is unable or not allowed to move
- after surgical repair of contractile tissue
10
Q
when should you use AAROM?
A
- when weak muscles cannot move a joint through a desired ROM against gravity (<3/5)
11
Q
when should you use AROM?
A
- part of an aerobic program
- pt has volitional control of movement
- for segments above and below immobilizations
12
Q
dosage for AROM
A
20-30 reps, 2-5 times per day
