PPT 7 Flashcards
Why Connections are Important
- Linking Up
- New developments need to be clearly linked to existing routes.
- Movement Choices
- Connections should give people the maximum choice in how
to make their journeys, with a presumption in favor of walking,
cycling and public transport. - A Sense of Place
- Making a connections is an essential part of creating a sense of
place. - Roads, streets and the routes for utilities should be designed in
response to the local context. - Safe Routes for all
- Maximizing choice in how people move around means creating
routes which makes its users feel safe. - Segregated routes for people on foot and cycles are not always the
best solution. - The Parking Problem
- Parking needs as much thought as connections.
- Better Traffic Management
- Design the layout of buildings and spaces to help control the flow
and density of traffic. - Signs and add-on traffic calming features should only be relied on as
additional measures.
Different Uses of Connections
- Walking
- Cycling
- Public Transport
- Street and Traffic
- Parking and Servicing
- Utilities Infrastructure
An assessment of roads in low-
and middle-income countries in
Asia, Africa, Easter Europe and
Latin America revealed that 84%
of the roads surveyed had no
pedestrian footpaths though they
carried motor vehicle traffic
moving at 40km/hr or more.
WALKING
5 C Principles for Pedestrian and
Cycle-friendly Streets:
- Connections: Do good pedestrian
routes connect the places where
people want tot go? - Convenience: Are routes, and are
crossings easy to use?; Do
pedestrians have to wait more
than 10 seconds to cross roads? - Convivial: Are routes attractive,
well lit and safe, and is there
variety along the street? - Comfortable: What is the quality
and width of the footway, and
what obstructions are there? - Conspicuousness: How easy is it to
fins and follow a route?; Are there
surface treatments and signs to
guide pedestrians?
CYCLING
Design for convenient cycling:
*On Low-speed Streets (below 30kph: 20mph)
- Cyclists can mix with vehicles.
*On Busy Streets (30-50kph: 20-30mph)
- There should be clearly defined cycle lanes.
Cycle Security:
*Design-in Cycle Parking from the
Outset
- In planning for the bicycle
parking, consider with other street users
as an integral part of the overall street
layout.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
When it’s too far to walk or cycle the best alternative to the car within
an urban area is generally the bus.
________ is a major factor in the quality of a development. The main consideration in deciding for parking provision is how to incorporate it in
a development without allowing it to dominate everything around.
