PPT #2 Flashcards
The most common psychiatric illness?
depression.
Non drug therapies available
exercising, nutrition, diet, spiritual guidance
What drugs are the MAOIs? (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)
Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Selegiline transdermal, Tranylcypromine
MAIOS (3 things)
weird side effects, food interactions, drugs with issues with electrolytes NA, K, CL
What are MAOIs prescribed for?
Major depression. But not the only one.It is rare to see a person on MAOIs
MAOIS work by blockin monamine oxidase– the enzyme that breaks down
norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine
MAOIS increase?
NE, 5-HT, and DA. This can elevate a clients mood and energize them
Clients taking MAOIs must avoid taking what?
food containing tyramine which are old and stinky (cheeses, aged processed meats, smoked and pickled fish, overly ripened fruit, beers and wines, sauerkraut, soy sauce)
Drugs to avoid when taking MAOIS
other antidepressants, otc cold meds, triptans, and meperidine
Excessive tyramine and norepinephrine levels can cause
High BP
What is serotonin syndrome
excessive serotonin, and an altered mental status , high fever, sweating and clonus (involuntary, rhythmic muscle contraction in the foot)
What are TCAs? What are the drugs?
tricyclic antideprresants. Drugs are Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline
What are TCAs used for?
Treating major depression, neuropathic pain, and anxiety disorders
TCAs block what pumps?
Serotonin and nor-epinephrine reuptake. This increases those levels in the synapses.
Adverse Effects:
anticholinergic effects, orthostatic hypotension, and cardiotoxicity (fatal heart dysthymias in overdose)
What are SSRIs? What are the drugs?
Selective serotinin reuptake inhibitors. These are clean. Drugs are Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil), and Sertraline (Zoloft)
TCAS increas
Serotonin and NE
SSRIs increase
Serotonin
The more neurotransmitters, the more….?
side effects
SSRIs are used for?
The 1st line drugs for depression and effective for treating anxiety
Side effects of SSRIS?
stomach troubles Slow metabolism Sexual dysfunction suicidal ideation sedation( fluoxetine is an exception. its stimulating)
What drugs are SNRIs?
Duloxetine, Venlafaxine
Uses for SNRIs?
For major depression. Duloxetine is used for neuropathic pain. Venlafaxine is used for anxiety disorders. More selective than TCAs
Side effects of SNRIs?
Similar to SSRIs but can also cause hypertension
Miscellaneous Antidepressants?
Buproprion and Trazodone
Used for depression and smoking cessation and adult ADHD and can increase libido and weight loss
buproprion
used for depression and insomnia
trazodone
Inhibits reuptake of DA and NE
Buproprion
Weak serotinin reuptake inhibitor with strong sedative and anticholinergic effects?
trazodone
Side effects of buproprion
anxiety, insomnia. contraindicated is a client has risk of seizures
Side effects of trazodone
Sedative and anticholinergic effects and priapism (erection of the penis thats painful)
What are black box warnings?
Warns of increased risk of suicidal thoughts.
