What drugs are the MAOIs? (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)
Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Selegiline transdermal, Tranylcypromine
MAIOS (3 things)
weird side effects, food interactions, drugs with issues with electrolytes NA, K, CL
What are MAOIs prescribed for?
Major depression. But not the only one.It is rare to see a person on MAOIs
MAOIS work by blockin monamine oxidase– the enzyme that breaks down
norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine
MAOIS increase?
NE, 5-HT, and DA. This can elevate a clients mood and energize them
Clients taking MAOIs must avoid taking what?
food containing tyramine which are old and stinky (cheeses, aged processed meats, smoked and pickled fish, overly ripened fruit, beers and wines, sauerkraut, soy sauce)
Drugs to avoid when taking MAOIS
other antidepressants, otc cold meds, triptans, and meperidine
Excessive tyramine and norepinephrine levels can cause
High BP
What is serotonin syndrome
excessive serotonin, and an altered mental status , high fever, sweating and clonus (involuntary, rhythmic muscle contraction in the foot)
What are TCAs? What are the drugs?
tricyclic antideprresants. Drugs are Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline
What are TCAs used for?
Treating major depression, neuropathic pain, and anxiety disorders
TCAs block what pumps?
Serotonin and nor-epinephrine reuptake. This increases those levels in the synapses.
Adverse Effects:
anticholinergic effects, orthostatic hypotension, and cardiotoxicity (fatal heart dysthymias in overdose)
