Cell Saver
Intraoperative cell salvage (IOCS) is an autologous blood transfusion method involving collecting and processing red blood cells during a surgical procedure for reintroduction into patient’s blood circulation.10 IOCS occurs in a multi-step process involving the collection of blood from the operative field through a double-lumen suction, mixing it with an anticoagulant at the same time, washing the collected blood and filtering it through a semipermeable membrane to remove cellular debris, and then reinfusing it usually soon after initial collection.11
