What are types of PPE?

What are Standard Precautions?
• Basic Handwashing and PPE principles • Should be performed and post interactions with patients • Antibacterial sanitizer may be used unless hands are visibly soiled
*CDC DOES NOT REQUIRE THE USE OF GLOVES FOR STANDARD PRECAUTIONS! This is different from specific hospital precautions.
What are Contact Precautions?
Gown, Gloves, and Washing Hands
Who Requires Contact Precautions?
• Blood Born Pathogens (HEP A/B/C, HIV/AIDS) • Contact Bacteria (MRSA, C. Diff, Vanco resistant, Psuedomonas) • Viruses (Herpes Simplex Virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
What are Droplet Precautions?
•Droplet (Mask within 3 feet of patient) • Gown • Gloves • Mask/Goggles/Shield (mask the patient as well)

Who Requires Droplet Precautions?
Virus (RAINS) • Rhinovirus • Adenovirus • Influenza virus (Flu) • Notovirus • Severe Acute Respiratory Virus (SARS) •
Bacteria • Bordetella pertussis (Whooping cough) • Meningococcal meningitis • Streptococcus** • Mycoplasma pneumoniae (pneumonia)
What are Airborne Precautions?
Airborne • Mask the patient with basic mask •(NIOSH) issued N95 or higher Respirator for clinicians
PATIENT WILL BE IN A NEGATIVE PRESSURE ROOM
Who Requires Airborne Precautions?
• Tuberculosis • Chicken Pox (Varicella) • Shingles (Herpes Zoster) • Measels (Rubeola)
