Pp Week 3 Flashcards
Why is sterilization and disinfection so important
Prevents the spread of Covid and other diseases
Protects staff members from viruses and bacteria
Prevents transmission through surface contact
Infection control is a priority
What is the chain of infection
How do you break the infection process
By breaking one link in the chain
What is it called when the body has the ability to resist disease
Immunity
Acute infection
Infection of short duration that is often severe example is a cold
Chronic infection
An infection of long duration
May not show symptoms of disease (asymptomatic) ex: HIV
What are the types of infection
Acute infection and chronic infection
What are the modes of transmission
Direct contact and indirect contact
Airborne transmission and parenteral Transmission
What is direct contact
Is person to person via Touch or contact with a persons blood or saliva
sneezing coughing spatter and Unprotected contact with infected lesions or infected body fluids
Hepatitis and HIV are spread by this route

What is indirect contact
With a contaminated instrument or surface
Airborne transmission (droplet infection)
Droplets of moisture that contain bacteria and viruses
ex: aerosol, spray, spatter during treatment
Parenteral transmission (Percuteanous)
Through the skin as with cuts or punctures
ex: needles, cuts, human bites with break of skin
What is the role and responsibility as a cdc and OSHA in isifection control
CDC: is NOT a regulatory agency their role is to issue SPECIFIC recommendations for health related matters
OSHA: IS a regulatory Agency its role is to issue specific standards designed to protect the health of employees
What is the CDC?.
Center for disease control and prevention
National public health agency of us
Conduct critical sciences and gives health into that protects nation against expensive and dangerous health threats and responds when these arise
What is OSHA?
Ensure safe working conditions for workers b making and enforcing standards and providing training outreach education and assistance
OSHA blood borne pathogen standard (BBP)
Universal precautions
Concept that all human blood and body fluids are treated as Infected with a blood borne disease
Standard precaution
This is the CDC expanded concept
This is to integrate and expand the elements of universal precautions into standard of care that is designed to protect healthcare providers and pathogens
Hand hygiene guidelines
Wash hand before gloving
Immediately after
After touching contaminated objects or surfaces
Alcohol based hand rubs
Concentrates of 60-95% are most effective
More effective then clean soap or even antimicrobial Hand wash at reducing microbial flora
You must always use PPE including
Protective clothing
Masks
Eyewear
Gloves
At all time
Utility gloves
Worn to clean a treatment room when contaminated instruments are being cleaned or handled over exam gloves
Correct sequencing for donning PPE
Correct sequence for removing PPE
Latex allergies
- irritant dermatitis
- Type iv allergic Reaction
- Type 1
Type 1
Most serious can result in death
Is The most severe form and results from closure of the airway caused by swelling called anaphylaxis
2-3 min after contact
Cleaning
Removes foreign material on surfaces
