Powerplant Flashcards
How many cylinders are in each engine
4 cylinders
Type of cooling
Liquid
Engine name
Thielert TAE 125
Petrol or diesel
4 stroke diesel
How is combustion achieved in a Diesel engine
Much higher compression ratio than a petrol engine causes spontaneous combustion due to such high pressure and heat
How are diesel cylinders heated for a cold start
Glow plug in each cylinder to preheat
What lubrication system does the engine utilise
Wet sump with external filter and oil cooler
From where does the engine and turbocharger get the oil for lubrication
Engine driven pump
Lubrication system capacity
6 litres
Approved oils for engine lubrication
Shell helix ultra synthetic
Aeroshell diesel oil
Approved oil for gearbox lubrication
Shell EP API oil
Maximum hourly oil consumption
0.1 litre
When will L/R OIL TEMP appear
Engine oil temperature exceeds 140 deg C
When will L/R OIL PRES appear
If engine oil pressure is below 1.2 bar
When will L/R GBOX TEMP appear
Engine gearbox temperature exceeds 120 deg C
Engine fuel injection system flowchart
Wing tanks -through filter at back of engine nacelle Engine driven low pressure pump Engine high pressure pump Common fuel rail -during induction stroke Cylinder
How is pressure controlled in the common fuel rail
Combined regulator and pressure relief valve
What happens to excess fuel in the common fuel rail
Returns to fuel system via a fuel cooler
What mixture is the DA42 coolant liquid
Water and antifreeze
What pumps the liquid of the DA42 coolant system
Belt driven integral pump
What is the difference between the main and bypass circuits of the coolant system
Main: has heat exchanger and thermostatic valve
Bypass: feeds liquid straight back to pump inlet
When would coolant be passed through the bypass circuit rather than the main circuit
If it is still cool and does not need to pass through the heat exchanger
How is the coolant system protected against overpressure
There is an overflow tank fitted with a pressure relief valve, and a pipe that can drain excess coolant out from the bottom of the engine nacelle
How do you physically check coolant levels
Engine cowling must be removed
When would L/R ENG TEMP appear
If engine coolant temperature exceeds 105 deg C
When would L/R COOL LVL appear
When engine coolant level is low
From where are exhaust gases collected for the turbocharger
Cylinder outlets
Where do exhaust gases get fed as part of the turbocharger system
The turbine
What drives the compressor in the turbocharger system
The turbine
What controls the amount of exhaust gases being fed to the turbocharger system, and by what method
The ECU controls it, by opening or closing a waste gate valve.
How does the system calculate how much to open the waste gate valve in the turbocharger system
A manifold pressure sensor behind the compressor
What does the waste gate controlling the volume of exhaust gases to the turbocharger prevent
Excessive manifold pressure at low density altitudes
What is the function of the compressor in the turbocharger system
To compress inlet air before it goes to the engine
How is compressed air further “powered” before reaching the engine
Passes through an intercooler, which cools and increases efficiency by increasing the density of the air
