Power Saws Flashcards
Is it necessary to turn off a horizontal bandsaw after completing a cutting operation? Why or why not?
No, because a switch is activated by the downward motion that stops the blade when the cut is finished.
How is feed rate controlled on a horizontal band saw?
Feed rate is controlled by an adjustable hydraulic cylinder
What are the saw guides an where should you use them, when using a horizontal band saw?
A set of guides or rollers that twist te blade into position for the cut. Position as close as possible to the stock.
If the blade jumps and shutters when you are using a horizontal band saw what could the problem be?
If the blade jumps the feed is to high.
What is another name used to call a counter band saw?
A counter band saw is also called a vertical band saw, and is used shaping metal (dial bar clamp) rather than cutting stock.
What is tracking in relation to band saws?
Tracking is making sure the blade does no run off the pulleys, but stays in the required position.
What is throat distance when referring to band saws?
Throat distance is the distance between the blade and the column (frame) work height is the distance between the table and the head.
What characteristics differentiate different styles of band saw blades?
Band saw blades differ in material, width, gauge, pitch, type of tooth (tooth form) and set.
What is the advantage of using a Bimetal blade in a band saw?
Bimetal blades have greater wear and hear resistance which allow for faster cutting speeds and better durability.
Where should you lace the weld when you are welding band saw blades?
The weld should occurs at the bottom of the tooth gullet.
How does blade set differ from blade kerf?
Blade set = the bend of the teeth
Blade kerf = width of cut
Abrasive cut off saws are used to cut what type of material?
Glass, ceramic, brick, and stone
Abrasive saws are most efficient for?
Cutting cross sections smaller than two inches in diameter. Large stock is best cut with a metal saw.
Name the four keys and there purposes.
Woodruff key - used in light applications such as pulls and gears.
Tapered gib head and gib head key - mainly used to lock the hub to the shaft in heavy load conditions.
1/8 inch per foot taper - do not use on cast iron because cast iron is brital.
Pratt and Whitney key - used on shafts up to 6” and used when hub slides back and fourth on the shaft.
What’s the main purpose for the use of Splines machined on a shaft?
They allow for a high Torque transfer between the component and the shaft.
