Millwright Theory Final Flashcards
What is a transfer punch used for?
Transferring bolt hole locations between to mating parts
What is the included angle on
A centre punch
A prick punch
90% on a Center punch
30 - 60 % on a Prick punch
Whats a beam type torque wrench good for?
They are useful for measuring rotating torques and preloads.
Name three types of torque wrenches?
Beam type
Dial type
Click type
What type of filing is used to remove large amounts of material?
Cross filing method
What type of filing method is used to produce a smooth finish?
Draw filing
What’s the most common type of abrasive used on a grinding wheel?
Aluminum oxide
What is the purpose of lapping?
To produce exceptionally true surfaces and accurate dimensions - it is also used for minute reductions in size. Small amounts of approx. 0.0005 inch
Also to produce a sealing surface without use of a gasket.
Two types of lapping surfaces plate?
Roughing or blocking
Finishing lapping
Why are serial taps used for?
Serial taps are used to cut difficult-to-tap materials by hand.
How do you find a tap drill size without a chart?
3/8 - 16 UNC 2B
TDS = MD - 1/N
TDS = 3/8 - I/ 16
MD - major Dia
N - number of threads per inch.
Name the three types of thread die’s
Adjustable split die
Adjustable screw die
Solid die
What are the three dies used for ??
Solid dies are used specifically for chasing.
Adjustable screw dies are used for taking progressive depths of cut to produce a thread.
Adjustable split dies are used in a die stock. The die stock is used to turn the die when cutting the thread.
What is the advantage of a spiral reamer?
They can be used in bores with keyways
The selection of a grinding wheel depends on what?
Material being ground
RPM of the grinding machine Spindle
Material removal rate
Required finish
How do you tell the grade of a grinding wheel
Abrasive type, grit size, grade, struture, bond type, norton symbol.
Soft - (A-H)
Medium - (I-P)
Hard - (Q-Z)
8,8,10
How does 1-15 with regards to chip clearance work?
15 has more clearance than 1
What are the settings for a grinding machine.
Tool rest and wheel gap = 1/16
Gap between the tool rest and face of the wheel must not exceed 1/8
The gap between the spark guard and periphery of the wheel should be between 1/16 - 1/4
What’s a kerf?
What is set?
Kerf is the width of cut
Set is the bend of the teeth.
Name the three types of blade sets
Raker, wavy, and straight.
Raker - most common!!! Used for general purpose and leaves a good finish.
Wavy - good for thin or tubular work pieces.
Strength - doesn’t leave a good surface finish but cute faster.
How is power of load identified on an explosive actuated tool.
and Colour
The three primary calibers are
.22 .25 .27
Brown Grey Green Yellow Red Purple
Long power loads are useful for what?
Tools specific for heavy-duty applications.
What’s the purpose of the plastic tip on the diameter of the fasteners
To protect the threads and to provide guidance.
Name the three faster types
Drive pins
Thread studs
Drive pin assemblies
How far should fasteners be spaced in concrete
3 inches apart from the edge and from each other.
What does load strength indicate?
Load strength is defined as a measure of ability
Metric and imperial threads - what’s H and h in terms of internal ad external?
What’s 2b in reference to class and internal/external
(h) is external, (H) is the internal
2 is class (general application) B is external
Class 3 is precision fit.
Whats the difference between thread cutting and thread forming.??
Thread cutting removes material
Thread forming bends and reforms material.
How do you calculate 10% loss on a 4:1 torque multiplayer
If the recommended torque for a bolt is 400ft lb divide by 3.6
When fastening to steel how far apart should your spacing be?
A general recommendation is to drive fasters 15mm (1/2” inch) from the edge and 50mm (2.0” inches) apart
