power relationships Flashcards
Pahl and Vogler : there are two main types of control over a family’s income
-the allowance system
-pooling
the allowance system
men give their wives an allowance, women need to budget to meet the family’s needs using this allowance
pooling
both partners have access to income, joint bank account where they both contribute money equally
Stephen Edgell’s (1980) study of professional couples found that decision making could be allocated into 3 categories, what were they?
-very important decisions
-important decisions
-less important decisions
very important decisions
generally economic/financial decisions e.g change of job or moving house
-made by husband, if made together husband had the final say
important decisions
focused on quality of family or children’s lives
e.g children schooling, where to go on holiday
-made together ,rarely by women alone
less important decisions
focused on everyday choices e.g what groceries to buy, what to cook for dinner, what to dress children in.
-often executively made by the wife
decision making becoming more equal
-pooling
-laurie and Gershuny= 70% of couples have
an equal say in decision-making
power is not equal
-Money management: Men still make
most important financial decision
-Decision making: Most important
decisions taken jointly or by man alone,
his career takes priority (Hardill)
-Domestic violence – women are more
likely to be victims
Time Use Survey of 2005 carried out by Lader et al. (2006) found that
-women in paid work spent 21 hours a week on average on housework, compared with only 12 hours spent by men on the same.
-Overall, this survey found that 92% of women do some housework per day, compared with only 77% of men.
- In 2005, women still spent more time than men cooking, washing up, cleaning, tidying, washing clothes and shopping. DIY and gardening tasks were still male dominated.
