Power relations between children and parents Flashcards
It can be argued that the balance of power between parents and children has become more equal and democratic e.g. children given more rights and protection of the law and are the centre of family life and expenses.
However, these reasons show why children are still far from equal to parents in most families:
Financial dependency
Children are financially dependent on parents until they are 16
Age patriarchy
adults more powerful than children
Authority
Although the law offers rights and protection, parents are given authority over their children
Full rights
Children do not receive full adult rights until they are 18 and the world they inhibit is largely one created by adults
Decision making
Parents still make the major decisions
Abuse
Many children suffer abuse at the hands of family members
