Power BI Flashcards
How would you define Power BI as an effective solution?
Power BI is a strong business analytical tool that creates insights and reports by collating data from unrelated sources, using interactive graphical interfaces and visualizations.
What are the major components of Power BI?
Power BI has major components:
Power Query: Used to collect , combine and transform data from multiple sources
Power Pivot: Used to create tabular data modeling and perform computations forthat utilizes dax. I
Power View: Viewing data visualizations providing interactive displays
Power BI Desktop Aggregate companion development tool assisting with other components
What are the various refresh options available? *
Package/OneDrive refresh: synchronizes power bi desktop or excel files between power bi services
Data/Model refresh: schedule the data import from sources
Tile refresh: refreshes tile cache on the dashboard
, Visual container refresh: updates the reports visuals once data is changed
What are the different connectivity modes in Power BI?
Direct Query: direct connection to power bi model. stores metadata of tables (example snowflake azure sql)
Live Connection: similar to direct query but is a direct connection to the analysis service model.
Import Data (Scheduled Refresh). We upload the data into power BI.
What are the different kinds of views?
Data View: Exploring data tables
Model View: Shows tables alongside with the relationships between them
Report View: Displays the tables in an interactive format to simplify data analysis
What are the data sources Power BI can connect?
Power BI can connect to
files (.xlsx, .csv, etc.),
databases (SQL, Azure, etc.
), and services (Google Analytics, Salesforce, etc.).
What are the building blocks of Power BI?
Datasets,
Visualizations
Reports: structured representation of datasets used to extract information and insights
Dashboards: Single page representation of reports made
Tiles: Single block containing visualizations of a report.
What is DAX?
DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) is a library of formulas used for calculations and data analysis in Power BI. It is essentially a functional programming language
Difference between Power BI and Tableau?
Power BI uses DAX; Tableau uses MDX. Tableau handles large data better but is more complex than Power BI.
What is GetData in Power BI?
GetData connects to various data sources, including files, databases, and online services.
What are filters in Power BI?
Filters sort data based on conditions at page, visualization, or report levels.
What are the types of visualizations in Power BI?
Visualizations are graphical
representation of data including things such as bar charts, donut charts, KPi’s, scatter charts etc
What do we understand by Power BI services?
Power BI services are cloud-based tools used to ETL ,sharing and viewing reports and dashboards.
What is the comprehensive working system of Power BI?
Power BI’s working system comprises of three steps
Data Integration: extract and integrate data into a staging area
Data Processing : Clean and transform data then store it in a data warehouse
Data Presentation: Through dashboards and reports.
What are custom visuals in Power BI?
With power bi visualizations you can apply customized visualizations to things such as charts, KPIs. This simplifys the complication of developers creating this from scratch. Once customize the visuals are packaged in pbiviz files and shared with the org. Some examples include organizational, custom and marketplace files
What are the various type of users who can use Power BI?
Business users, analysts, developers, and IT professionals.
What are the advantages of Power BI?
User-friendly, powerful ETL toolkit, fast updates, real-time dashboards, secure data connections.
What are some disadvantages of Power BI?
software is not intuitive
the dashboards and reports sharing is limited are limited
, free tier cant process more than 1gb of data,
you cant cant store adjusted filters
What is a common workflow in Power BI?
Fetch data,
clean and manipulate,
create reports and build the dashboard, share dashboards
and then extract insights.
What are the main business applications of Power BI?
Extract insights,
create reports,
track progress,
analyze KPIs, and
share data visually.
Where is the data stored in Power BI?
Data is stored is stored in fact tables (quantitive) or dimension tables (attributes) in Azure Blob Storage (user data) and Azure SQL Database (metadata).
What does self-service business intelligence (SSBI) mean?
SSBI an approach that allows end users to analyze and visualize data intuitively without technical expertise.
What are content packs in Power BI?
Packages of dashboards, reports, and datasets stored as a group used shared within an organization or with services like Google Analytics.
How can we define relationships between two tables in Power BI?
Relationships can be defined manually (keys) or automatically if autodetect is enabled.
Types of filters in power bi
report level: apply filters to each report page. ex sales data for 2023
page level: apply filters to pages ex: 1 page is us sale and 1 page is European sales
visual level: bar chart to show sales in ELECTRONICS
slicer(user defined): filter data by catagory, data , region or timeframe. ex date slice for jan - junes
