Power Assited Steering Flashcards
Why is power assisted steering needed?
Because of increased loads on steered wheels
What are some examples of increased loads on steering wheels?
Additional weight of large power trains
Change in steering geometry design
Wider section tyres
What requirements must PAS meet?
Must be Fail safe- must be able to retain control in an emergency
Assistance proportional to the effect applied
What are the 3 components required with a rack and pinion PAS?
Pump and reservoir (integral PRV)
Control valve
Ram cylinder
How is the hydraulic pump driven?
By a belt of the engine complete with reservoir and filter
What is the operation of PAS when travelling in a straight line?
Pump supplies oil to the control valve that connects to the pinion
Control is in the neutral position
Fluid returns to reservoir
No PAS
What is the operation when turning?
Pump supplies oil to the control valve that connects the pinion
Control valve is in the turn position
Fluid pressurises one side of the piston m
Ram moves turning the wheels
Displaced fluid returns to the pump reservoir via a control valve ?
What valve allows displaced fluid to return to the pump reservoir?
Control valve
What is situated in the steering box to relive excessive pressure?
Pressure relief valve
What controls the outlet and inlet of the oil ?
Rotary control valve (spool valve)
At low rpm (e.g parking) power assistance is what?
High
High rpm (cruising) power assistance is what?
Reduced giving driver more of a feel
What does the control valve do?
Reduce pump pressure at predetermined speed
What are the maintenance for the PAS?
Check oil level
Leaks
Check condition and routing of all pipes
Drive belt condition and tension
What causes noisy power assisted steering?
Low fluid level
Slack drive belt
Malfunctioning control valve
Internal worm pump
