Four Wheel Steering Flashcards
Why do modem cars have slight understeer?
Improve stability at high speeds
What helps to improve the slip of tyres as well as reducing the turning circle?
Rear wheels steer in the opposite direction then the front wheels
At high speeds the steering movements are subtle and turn in what direction?
The same direction and move in a crab like manner which improves stability
At fast speeds what direction are the wheels moved?
Same direction
At low speeds rear wheels are turned in what direction?
Opposite to the direction of the front wheels
What are the advantages of a 4 wheel steering system?
Superior cornering ability
Improved steering responsiveness
High speed straight line stability
Improved lane changing manoeuvres
Smaller turning radios and tight space manoeuvrability at low speed
What do 2 axles at the front of a vehicle do?
Share out and support the load
What are the advantages of twin steered front axle over single axle?
Static payload and stress per axle is lessened
Road holding improved
A puncture of one of the tyres will not prevent the vehicle being safely steered to a standstill
What are the 4 modes of steering?
Front wheel steer
Crab steer
Opposite phase steer
Rear wheel steer
