How significant was the Peasants’ Revolt in the short term?
- First major uprising against a monarch, scared Richard II
- He realised he should raise taxes less
- Poll tax wasn’t repeated until 1989
- Peasants could ask for higher wages again
- Richard II ignored the peasants’ demands and executed their leader Wat Tyler
How significant was the Peasants’ Revolt in the long term?
- Gradually ended the Feudal System
- Spread the idea of equality (John Ball) which was included in the US declaration of independence

Regarded posthumously as the father of parliament
What caused the Provisions of Oxford?
Three points
- Henry III was always demanding more tax
- Relied on foreign advisors for advice (E.g. Peter de Roches)
- Invasion of Sicily was costly and didn’t benefit England, only Henry and the Pope
How did economic reasons cause the Magna Carta?
Scutage - made barons unhappy
Inheritance tax - angered the barons and John held hostages if they didn’t pay
How did military reasons cause the Magna Carta?
John lost many battles in France (Battle of Bouvines), so was nicknamed “Lackland”
He also lost land belonging to his barons, which angered many of them
How did religion cause the Magna Carta?
John fell out with the Pope after refusing to support the appointment of Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury. As a result, all Church services were banned
How did religion cause the Peasants’ Revolt?
John Ball taught equality because of Adam and Eve and how they were created equally by God etc. etc.
