Define: Hard power
The use of a country’s military power to persuade other countries to do something, rather than the use of cultural or economic influence
Define: Soft power
Involves shaping the preferences of others through appeal and attraction- not coerce
Define: Smart power
Combination of hard and soft power
Define: Structural power
Refers to the way in which powerful nation-states can determine ‘how things shall be done’
Different systems of government:
Democratic states:
Government is elected by the public and is held accountable in regular elections
Autocratic/non-democratic states pose a threat to peace and stability
Semi-democratic state = Provides no opportunities for its citizens to hold government accountable for its actions

Does not act according to international norms of behaviour and acts in defiance of international law

Government has entirely broken down. Law and order cannot be maintained
