Silence, sentries
Sibilance captures the noise of the wind
What are we doing here?
Rhetorical question highlights the helplessness of the soldiers
poignant misery of dawn
Oxymoron
melancholy army
Attacks once more
Personification of weather
flowing flakes that flock
Alliteration - power
But nothing happens
Helplessness of soldiers
Pale flakes with fingering stealth come feeling for our faces
Personification - hunting them
Is it that we are dying?
Rhetorical question - yes
Slowly our ghosts drag home:
Half living
Crusted red jewels
Metaphor - their blood for zen in ice representing how valuable their lives are
For love of God seems dying
Even God is turning his back on the soldiers
