Power Flashcards
Inhalation
Inhalators muscles are active during this process to allow for more space in the lungs.
There is an increase in lung volume creating negative air pressure which leads to the breath flowing in.
What muscles are involved in inhalation
Diaphragm and external intercostal muscles
What happens during inhalation
Diaphragm contracts and lowers - abdomen engaged
Internal intercostals lift and spread - muscles of neck, chest, back and abdomen used
Exhalation
The diaphragm and intercostal contract creating less space in the thorax/lungs which increases air pressure which creates and outward flow of breath.
Muscles involved are internal intercostal muscles and abdomen
What is exhalation
Diaphragm relaxes and rises -abdominal muscles
Internal intercostal muscles pull down and compress - neck, back, chest and abdomen muscles
What is recoil breathing ?
Recoil describes the sensation of breath rushing in without having to actively breathe.
What is respiratory attractor state ?
Where your breathing naturally sits
