- Involves shaping or guiding others’ actions, beliefs, or decisions through persuasion, example, or appeal
- Gives people options

What is authority?
- Accepted as legitimate power by whom it is exercised upon
- Exercised with consent
What are the types of authority?

What is traditional authority?
- Based on long established customs, practices, and cultural norms.
- inherited/passed down
What is rational-legal authority?
- Based on rules, laws, and procedures
- power given to them because of legal position/office
What is charismatic authority?
- Based on an individual’s personal charm, influence, or extraordinary qualities
- supported for their charisma, vision, abilities
- usually forms in times of crisis
What is coercive authority?
- Relies on the use of threat of force, punishment, or fear to compel obedience and control behavior
- based on ability to impose penalties

- status and position backed power
- usually official
What is coercive power?
employs the use of force, threats, and other forms of coercion
What is expert power?
- power of knowledge, expertise, and skills
- non-coercive
What is reward power?
- potential to impact others based on control over distribution of rewards
- highest when the reward is scarce
What is referent power?
- ability to impact others based on strength of relationship
- based more on relationship than status
- person has charisma/ability to connect with others
What is informational power?
- access to specific information that no one else has
- delivers persuasive and compelling reasons
- creates cognitive change
cognitive - changes in the knowledge of participants and relate to how people observe, think, problem solve, and remember
