Powders Flashcards
Why are smaller particles beneficial?
- larger surface area
- faster solution rate
- stays in suspension longer
What is micrometrics?
- the science of small particles
- includes dissolution rate, suspendability, angle of repose, porosity, true volume, bulk volume and apparent density
How can particle size be determined?
- light scattering
- seiving
- microscopy
- sedimentation rate
How can particle shape be determined?
- angle of repose
- microscopy
What does an angle >50 degrees mean when using angle of repose?
The material being examined has poor flow
What is a pycnometer used for?
- finding apparent density
What happens when particles increase in size?
the space between the particles increases and the apparent density increases (larger volume per unit of mass)
What is communition?
- the process of reducing the particle size of a solid
- can be trituration or levigation
What are 2 common levigating agents?
- glycerin
- mineral oil
What are eutectic mixtures?
- when the melting point of the mixture is depressed and the mixtures liquifies
How can you fix eutectic problems?
- allow the eutectic mixture to form then mix in an inert diluent (calcium, magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide, talc)
- add eutectic substances with inert diluents separately, then mix them together (avoids the melting process)
What are the dosage form of powders?
- capsules
- tablets
- powder papers
- dusting powder
- soaking powder
- bulk powders
