Posture Flashcards
Ideal posture
stable
maintains body mass over BOS
minimizes stress/strain on tissues both statically/dynamically
minimizes energy cost
Normal posture
through lobe of ear, head slightly forward cervical bodies shoulder joint midway through trunk greater trochanter slightly anterior to knee slightly anterior to lateral malleolus
Normal posture
external auditory meatus odontoid process of axis lumbar vertebral bodies sacral promontory posterior to center of hip joint slightly anterior to knee through calcaneocuboid joint
BOS
body part in contact with the supporting surface & area between the supporting structure
COG
point around which the mass of the body is equally distributed
anterior to S1-S2
Normal spine curves
Slight lordosis of cervical/lumbar
Slight kyphosis of thoracic
Principles of alignment, joints, and muscles
faulty alignment results in undue stress/strain on bones.joints, muscles
joint positions indicate which muscles appear elongated and which appear shortened
a relationship exists between alignment and muscle test findings if posture is habitual
muscle shortness brings muscle O and I closer together
adaptive shortening can develop in muscles that remain in a shorten condition
muscle weakness allows separation of the O & I of the muscle
stretch weakness can occur in one-joint muscles that remain in an elongated condition
5 reasons of abnormal posture
1) Lack of flexibility or mobility?
2) Weakness?
3) Pain?
4) Built that way?
5) Habit?
