Cardiopulmonary Lab (Palpations/Auscultation/BP) Flashcards
Femoral Artery
Location: Femoral Triangle
- inguinal ligament
- longus muscle
- sartorius muscle
Pathway: passes under inguinal ligament @ midpoint
Palpate: inferior to inguinal ligament halfway between ASIS & pubic tubercle
Positon: Supine, hip ER/ABD & rest foot on opposite
Popliteal Artery
Location: Popliteal Fossa
- biceps femoris
- SM & ST
- med/lat heads of gastroc
Pathway: through popliteal fossa
Palpate: deepest structure running against joint capsule
- post tibial n.
- directly under this n.
Position: Sitting/Supine, knee flexed for muscles/fascia to relax
Posterior Tibial Artery
Location: behind the medial malleolus
Pathway: between FDL and FHL
Palpate:
- post tibialis tendon behind & inferior medial malleolus
- FDL (flex toes) behind PT tendon & above medial malleolus
- FHL (deep, not palpable) and located @ post tibia
- PT artery lies in tissue space behind the post tin (invert & PF) & FDL tendons
Position: Foot NWB and tendons slack
Dorsalis Pedis Artery
Location: along the dorsum of the foot, midline or slightly medial
Carotid Artery
Location: inferior to the angle of the mandible & anterior to the SCM m.
Brachial Artery
Location: medial to the biceps in the antecubital fossa or medial aspect of the midshaft of the humerus
Radial Artery
Location: @ wrist ont he volar forearm medial to the stylus process of the radius

Primary Auscultation Sites (4)
Aortic: R 2nd intercostal space (sternal)
Pulmonary: L 2nd intercostal space (sternal)
Tricuspid: L 4th intercostal space (sternal)
Mitral: L 5th intercostal space (midclavicular)
Pulmonary Auscultation Sites (3)

2) Middle Lung
3) Lower Lung
BP measures…
function of the heart
How to measure BP…
120/80 textbook normal
Inflate until you can’t hear anymore
Add 20-30 mmHg
deflate 2-3 mmHg/sec
1st sound - systolic
2nd sound or disappearance of sound - diastolic
