Define postpartum haemorrhage

A

Primary = in the first 24 hours after delivery
Secondary = >24 hours - 6weeks after delivery

Estimated blood lose >500ml in NVD and >1000ml in c/s

What is persistent PPH?

A

Active bleeding >1000ml within 24 hours following birth that continues despite use of initial measures including uterotonic agents and massage

What are the causes of PPH?

A

Incomplete placenta passage (ie retained products of conception)
Perineal tearing/trauma
Uterine Atony
Coagulation defects
Uterine inversion

Why do we sample cord blood at birth?

A

Sensitive index for asphyxia
pH<7 has increased long term risks for neonate
