-argues that in the postmodern era, families are varied in form because they are constantly changing and there is no set structure that can be regarded as an ideal. Families and households are not static, concrete things because family life is in a continual state of flux and change. If every experience of family is different there can be no universal criteria by which families can be judged.

-Concept of a family is becoming obsolete because of the growing importance of non-family households. People no longer feel they have to maintain relationships with family members out of a sense of duty or obligation. Instead people are now more likely to subscribe to personal communities made up of a combination of relatives and friends.
