Nuclear family
Composed by 2 heterosexual married parents plus children who shar a common residence (most preferred family by the new right and functionalists, most prevalent family type)
Extended families
Includes grandparents and other relatives, traditionally seen all living under one roof.
Lone parent families
In 2019- 2.9 million lone parent families in England.
Increasing number of middle-class career women are electing to have children later on in life and bring them up on their own.
90% of these families are by women.
Reconstituted (step) families
Step families, growing statistics of these types because of increase rates in divorce and remarriage. 8% of families in England in 2019 were stepfamilies.
Beanpole families
The ageing population and the decline in number of children people are having have led to the emergence of bean pole families.
Family structure is tall and thin as there are fewer children and people are living longer
Same sex families
1967- Homosexual relationships between men over 21 legalised.
2005- same sex civil partnership.
2014- same sex marriage
Although it is still a minority these types of families are emerging and increasing thanks to changes in laws.
Non- family households
-Single person households- Ageing population has helped the increase of this.
54% contains a woman and 46% contains a man.
