Postmodernism Flashcards
Basic ideas (2)
Growing individualism explains why people commit crime, ‘crime’ is no longer a useful concept as it reflects socially constructed ideas about certain behaviours that fall into a narrow category
Re-thinking crime prevention and punishment- Henry and Milovanovic (2)
Harms of reduction: where someone uses their power in a way which results in an immediate loss of possession or causes some form of harm e.g. murder, theft
Harms of repression: individuals future growth is threatened, includes behaviours that are hard to police e.g. racism, sexual harassment
Reducing crime and social harm- Foucault (2)
CCTV is an effective means of regulating behaviour and reducing crime, ppl who know they’re being watched are less likely to commit crime as chances of being caught are greater
Bauman and Lyon (3)
‘liquid surveillence’- many forms like phones which people buy and use willingly and make our lives transparent, Postmodernists suggest that surveillance is changing the belief from right to privacy to nothing to hide therefore nothing to fear. This suggests how powerful surveillance is as a mechanism for social control
Evaluation
Postmodernists take into account the changing social context of UK society :)
They don’t address the major cause of a lot of crimes which lie in structural inequalities :(
