Neo Marxism Flashcards
Criticise Marxism for… (3)
Ignoring victims of crime, assuming r/c have full control over lawmaking, being sympathetic towards offenders
3 factors to consider why a crime happens
- Individual motivating factors (like anger/alcohol) cannot give a full explanation
- Societal factors
- Take interactionist approach to consider the behaviour of the victim, offender, media and CJS and how they interacted to influence what happened in response to the crime
Wider social origins of deviant act
The wider context like capitalism
Immediate origins of deviant act
The specific situation leading criminals to commit a deviant act e.g. unemployment
The actual act and what it means to be deviant
Is it seen as a political act against r/c or to support a drug habit?
Immediate origins of societal reaction
How do people react to the discovery of the act?
Outcomes of the reaction on the deviant’s further action
Lead to re-offending?
Hall “Policing the crisis” (3)
Moral panic over mugging by black men (scapegoat), 1970s brought ‘crisis of capitalism’ bringing unemployment
Hall said by making the young black man someone to fear it united a fractured white UK society, allowing random stop and search, labelling black youths led to deviancy amplification
Hall’s ideas more comprehensive than blaming capitalism, showing the social processes in becoming criminal
Evaluation
An important critique of Trad Marx economic determinism :)
Left realists like Young argue it ‘romanticises’ the view of criminals who mistakenly express their anger through crime :(
