Posterior Thigh and Popliteal Fossa Flashcards
What are the three hamstring muscles?
Biceps femoris
Semitendinous muscle
Semimembranous muscle
Origin and insertion of long head of biceps?
Origin - ischial tuberosity
Insertion - head of fibula
Origin and insertion of short head of biceps?
Origin - linea aspera of post femur
Insertion - head of fibula
What innervates biceps femoris?
Common fibular nerve
What movement does biceps femoris allow?
small amount of lat rotation when the knee is flexed
Origin and insertion of semitendinous muscle
Origin ischial: tuberosity
insertion : upper ant aspect of proximal tibia
Origin and insertion of semiembranous muscle
Origin - ischial tuberosity
Insertion -prox tibia - (higher than semitendinous)
Action of the hamstring muscles?
Extension of the lower limb at the hip joint
Flex the lower limb at the knee joint
What are the upper boundaries of the polpiteal fossa?
Lateral - biceps femoris
Medial- semitendinous and semimembranous
What are the lower boundaries of the polpiteal fossa?
lateral - lateral head of gastrocnemius
medial - medial head
Where does the sciatic nerve bifurcate
just before the polpiteal fossa
What are the contents of the popliteal fossa
Large amount of fat Tibial nerve Common fibular nerve popliteal vein - branch to small saphenous vein popliteal artery (deepest)
What makes up the roof of the popliteal fossa
SKin and superficial fascia
What makes up the floor of the popliteal fossa
Popliteus muscle
