Posterior Neck Flashcards
Splenius
-origin: spinous processes of C4-T6
splits into splenius capitis and splecius cervicis
-insertion:
splenius capitis>posterior aspect of mastoid process
splenius cervicis>transverse processes of C1-C4
-action:
unilaterally>rotates head and neck unilaterally
bilaterally>assists with cervical extension
-innervation: dorsal rami of cervical spinal nerves
Levator Scapulae
- originate: transverse processes of C1-C4
- insertion: superior angle of scapula
- action: elevate scapula or side bend neck ipsilaterally
- innervation: dorsal scapular nerve (C5), a branch of the brachial plexus
where can you find Accessory Nerve (CN XI) and Transverse Cervical Artery
under trapezius. leaving posterior triangle of neck, lateral to levator scapulae, and entering the muscle
Semispinalis
-origin: transverse processes of thoracic vertebrae
-insertion: spinous processes (or posterior skull) above the origin
capitis>posterior skull
cervicis>spinous processes (deep to capitis)
-action:
unilaterally>rotate head and neck contralaterally
bilaterally>assist with cervical extension
-innervation: posterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
what are the muscles muscles of Suboccipital Triangle, innervation and action
rectus capitis posterior minor
rectus capitis posterior major
obliquus capitis inferior
obliquus capitis superior
- innervation: suboccipital nerve (emerges from center of triangle)
- action: proprioception
Rectus Capitis Posterior Major attachments
inferior nuchal line to C2 spinous process
Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor attachments
inferior nuchal line of skull to posterior tubercle of C1
Obliquus Capitis Superior attachments
inferior nuchal line of skull to transverse process of C1
Obliquus Capitis Inferior attachments
spinous process of C2 to transverse process of C1
what are the three nerves that are associated with the suboccipital triangle
- Suboccipital Nerve (dorsal ramus of C1)
- Greater Occipital Nerve (dorsal ramus of C2)
- Least Occipital Nerve (dorsal ramus of C3)
