Posterior Mediastinum Flashcards
What seperates the inferior and superior mediastinum?
Line- connects sternal angle anteriorly- T4/5 junction posteriorly
Where does the trachea bifurcate?
T4/5
What does the posterior mediastinum contain?
Descending aorta
Azygos veins
Oesophagus
Thoracic duct
Splanchnic and intercostal nerves
What structures does the descending aorta give rise to?
Posterior intercostal arteries- supply intercostal
Bronchial arteries- supply lung
Oesophagal
Pericardial
Phrenic- supply diaphragm
What level does the aorta pass through diaphragm?
T12
What level does the azygos veins arise
L1/L2- abdomen
Drain blood from posterior thoracic and returns superior vena cava
What does azygos system contain?
Azygos vein right side
Shorter hemiazygos vein left side
What is it called where trachea bifurcates?
Carina
Innervation of oesophagus?
Descending aorta- oesophageal arteries
What level does the oesophagus pass through the diaphragm?
T10- oesophageal hiatus
Function thoracic duct?
Return lymph to venous system
What structure gives rise to the thoracic duct?
Cisterna chyli
What is a ganglion?
Collection of bodies outside CNS
What level are cell bodies of preganglionic sympathetic neurons?
Thoracic and upper lumbar spinal segments
T1-L2/3
Path of fibres
Exit in spinal nerves T1-L2/3
Enter sympathetic trunk via communicating branch
