Posterior compartment of the leg Flashcards
what is posterior compartment of leg?
Divided into superficial and deep sub compartments by the transverse intermuscular
septum
what is the superficial posterior compartment?
- Three Muscles
- Primarily responsible for
Plantarflexion of the ankle
what is superficial posterior compartment innervated by ?
All innervated by: Tibial Nerve
what is gastrocnemius?
- Most superficial of the muscles in the posterior compartment
- Has two heads and acts on both the knee and ankle joints
what is origin, function, and insertion of gastrocnemius?
origin - Lateral Head: Lateral Femoral Condyle
Medial Head: Medial Femoral Condyle
function - Plantarflexes Ankle, Flexes Leg at Knee
insertion - Calcaneus via Calcaneal Tendon
what is soleus?
A large flat muscle under the gastrocnemius muscle
what is the origin, function, and insertion of soleus?
origin - Soleal Line of Tibia;
Head and Superior part of
Posterior Fibula
function - Plantarflexes Ankle
insertion - Posterior Surface of
Calcaneus via Calcaneal Tendon
what is plantaris?
Is a small muscle with a short belly and a long tendon
what is the origin, function, and insertion of plantaris?
origin - Supracondylar Line of Femur
function - Weakly Plantarflexes Ankle
insertion - Posterior Surface of
Calcaneus via Calcaneal Tendon
what is deep posterior compartment of leg?
Pass under the Flexor Retinaculum
what is deep posterior compartment of leg innervated by?
Tibial Nerve
what is popliteus?
The smallest and most superior of the deep muscles
what is the origin, function, and insertion of popliteus?
origin - Lateral Condyle of Femur
function - Weakly Flexes Knee, Unlocks Knee
insertion - Posterior Surface of Tibia Superior to Soleal Line
what is flexor digitorum longus?
Originates on the medial side of posterior leg and inserts into
the lateral four digits of the foot
what is origin, function, and insertion of flexor digitorum longus?
origin - Tibia Inferior to Soleal Line
function - Flexes Lateral Four Digits, Plantarflexes Ankle
insertion - Distal Phalanges of Lateral Four Digits
