Patella, tibia, fibula and knee joint Flashcards
what is patella/kneecap
- The largest sesamoid bone
- It’s triangular (base and apex)
- Two surfaces- anterior surface (non articular) and posterior surface articulates with the
femur & has medial & lateral facets
what is the function of tibia and fibula
- Tibia articulates with the
condyles of the femur
superiorly and the talus
inferiorly - Fibula mainly functions as an
attachment for muscles, and it
is also important for the
stability of the ankle joint. - shafts of the tibia and
fibula are connected by a dense
interosseous membrane.
what are the proximal ends of tibia?
- Medial tibial condyle
- Lateral tibial condyle
- Intercondylar area
- Tibial tuberosity
what is the three surfaces on shaft of tibia?
Three surfaces : medial, lateral, and posterior.
Ø Medial surface- smooth and subcutaneous
Ø Posterior surface – contains soleal line
Ø Lateral surface – smooth and unremarkable
what is the distal end of tibia?
- Medial malleolus
- Fibular notch
- Articular surface
what is the fibula?
- The lateral bone of the leg
- Does not take part in formation of the knee joint or in weight-bearing.
- It is much smaller than the tibia
what is the proximal end of fibula
head and neck
what is the shaft of fibula?
delicate
what is distal end of fibula?
lateral malleolus
true or false, knee joint is the largest synovial joint
true
what does knee joint consist of?
- Articulation between the femur and tibia= femorotibial
- Articulation between the patella and the femur= femoropatellar
label the proper extracapsular ligaments in knee joint
o Patellar ligament
o Fibular collateral ligament
o Tibial collateral ligament
o Oblique popliteal ligament
o Arcuate popliteal ligament

FCL is green
TCL is blue
OPL is yellow
APL is purple
what is patellar ligament?
- Is the continuation of the quadriceps femoris tendon
- Extend from the apex of patella to the tibial tuberosity
what is fibular collateral ligament?
extends from lateral femoral epicondyle to fibular head
what is tibial collateral ligament?
extends from the medial epicondyle of femur to the
medial condyle of tibia
what is oblique popliteal ligament?
a recurrent expansion of the tendon of the
semimembranosus
what is Arcuate popliteal ligament?
Arises from the posterior aspect of the fibular head, Passes
superomedially over the tendon of the popliteus & Spreads over the posterior surface of
the knee joint
true or false, intracapsular ligaments do not interconnect femur and tibia
false
what is anterior cruciate?
attaches to the ANTERIOR part of tibia and ascends posteriorly to attach to intercondylar
fossa of the femur
what is posterior cruciate?
attaches to the POSTERIOR aspect of the tibia and ascends anteriorly to attach to the
medial wall of the intercondylar fossa of the femur
what is meniscus?
- Two fibro cartilaginous discs: medial & lateral
- Deepen and stabilize
- Shock absorbers
what is lateral meniscus?
- Nearly circular
- Smaller
- Freely movable
- Not as
Susceptible to
Injury
what is medial meniscus?
- C-shaped
- Broader
Posteriorly - Firmly adhered to
the- Tibial
