Posterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
Quadratus Lumborum Main Actions
Unilaterally:
- Laterally tilt/hike/elevate pelvis
- Laterally flex the vertebral column to the same side
Bilaterally
- Fix the last rib during forced inspiration
Quadratus Lumborum Superior Attachment
12th ribs and tips of lumber TP
Quadratus Lumborum Inferior Attachment
Iliolumbar ligament and iliac crest
Quadratus Lumborum Nerve Innervation
Ventral branches of T12, L1-L4
Psoas Major Main Actions
Acting inferiorly w/Iliacus, flex hip
Acting superiorly, flexes the vertebral column laterally, balances trunk
When sitting, acts inferiorly w/ iliacus to flex trunk
Psoas Major Superior Attachment
TP of T12-L5 vertebrae, sides of L bodies, and discs between them
Psoas Major Inferior Attachment
Lesser Trochanter
Psoas Major Nerve Innervation
Ventral Rami of L1-L3
Iliacus Main Actions
Flexes thigh and stabilizes hip joint; acts w/ psoas major
Iliacus Superior Attachment
Iliac fossa, sacrum, and anterior sacroiliac ligaments
Iliacus Inferior Attachment
Lesser trochanter and psoas tendon
Iliacus Nerve Innervation
Femoral L2 to L4
Rectus Abdominis Main Actions
Flex the Vertebral column
Compress abdominal Viscera
Tilt pelvis posteriorly (antilordosis)
Rectus Abdominis Origin

Rectus Abdominis Insertion
Cartilage of 5-7 ribs and xiphoid process
Rectus Abdominis Nerve Innervation
Thoraco-abdominal nerves (anterior rami of T6-T12 spinal nerves)
External Oblique Main Actions
Unilaterally:
- Laterally flex the vertebral column to the same side
- Rotate the vertebral column to the opposite side
Bilaterally:
- Flex the vertebral column
- Compress abdominal contents
External Oblique Origin
External surface of 5-12 ribs
External Oblique Insertion
Linea alba, pubic tubercle, and anterior half of iliac crest
External Oblique Nerve Innervation

Internal Oblique Main Actions
Unilaterally:
- Laterally flex the vertebral column to the same side
- Rotate the vertebral column to the ipsilateral side
Bilaterally:
- Flex the vertebral column
- Compress abdominal contents
Internal Oblique Origin
Thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal ligament
