Post MI Flashcards
What is an MI
A heart attack also known as a myocardial infarction happens when flow of blood that brings oxygen to a part of your heart muscle becomes blocked.
Your heart cannot get enough oxygen, if blood flow is not restored quickly the heart muscle will begin to die.
What are most heart attacks caused by?
Most heart attacks care caused by coronary artery disease.
Your age, lifestyle habits and other medical conditions can raise risk of a heart attack.
Whatare the symptoms of MI?
Chest and upper body pain
SOB
Dizziness
Sweatiness
Nausea
Coughing
Wheezing
What has a factor on the intensity of damage?
The longer the heart goes without enough oxygen, the more damage is done to the heart muscle.
What are contraindications to exercise after MI.
- Unstable angina
- Severe SOB
- Severe hypotension
- Resting tachycardia
- Uncontrolled diabetes
What assessments can be done for MI?
Blood pressure
Heart rate
2 minute walk test
BORG RPE
TImed up and go - assesses breathlessness and heart rate
- cardiovascular function in functional activity
What are the areas of the modified BORG dypnoea scale?
0 - nothing at all
0.5 extremely slight (just noticeable)
1 very slight
2 slight
3 moderate
4 somewhat severe
5 severe
6
7 very severe
8
9 extremely severe (almost maximal)
10 Maximal
What cardiorespiratory exercises would be provided post MI?
Breathing control
Thoracic expansion exercises
Mobility
- Gait training –
Tandem walking
Step ups- hip flexion if shuffling
Sit-to-stand – improve posture
Side walking
indicators to stop exercising?
Indicators to stop exercising:
* inability to speak in full sentences
* chest pain or tightness
* excessive fatigue
* light-headedness
* confusion
* nausea
* paleness
* excessive sweating
* any new pain.
What are aerobic exercises for post MI?
Step ups
Marching
Hip abductions
Mini squats
Trunk rotations
What education should be provided to patients post MI?
what is an MI, symptoms, warning signs
Recommend use of Modified Borg breathlessness scale to use at home when exercising at 3 or 4
What are heart attack warning signs?
chest pain – a feeling of pressure, heaviness, tightness or squeezing across your chest
pain in other parts of the body – it can feel as if the pain is spreading from your chest to your arms (usually the left arm, but it can affect both arms), jaw, neck, back and tummy
feeling lightheaded or dizzy
sweating
shortness of breath
feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
an overwhelming feeling of anxiety (similar to a panic attack)
coughing or wheezing
What follow up instructions might be provided to MI patients?
To make progressions and review how you are getting along
Rate confidence 1-10 how soon do you think you would need a follow-up
What recommendations can be made?
Cardio-pulmonary rehab in community
Aqua aerobics
Dance
Tai chi
Healthy lifestyle promotions- eating healthier, exercising to reduce fatty build ups in arteries and reduce risk of another MI.
what warm up exercises can be used in MI?
Warm up
Neck rotations
Neck side flexions
Shoulder rotations
Chest stretch
Trunk rotations
Trunk side bends
Seated marching
Knee extensions
Heel raises
