What would one expect from a denture on day 1?
Will feel very strange and may wish to wear for just short time
What to expect first few weeks?
Excess saliva for first few weeks
May have a lisp or difficulty controlling dentures while talking but this will settle
Eating - cut food into smaller pieces and eat softer foods, chew on both sides to prevent tipping
Soreness - may rub and cause ulcers, if very sore remove and try 1-2 days before next appt. May need adjusting
What to expect first few months?
Things will get easier and denture control will come to you
Will be able to eat wider variety of foods but very hard foods will always be tricky
If denture provided right after extractions it may become loose as bone remoulds itself
When should one remove and clean their dentures?
After eating - rinse with water
Always cleaned morning and night
Removed at night when sleeping
How do you clean the denture?
Always clean over full sink of water to prevent breakage if dropped
Remove and rinse debris with water, never boiling water
Brush with a toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cream or unperfumed soap such as washing up liquid
Only use denture cleaners out of the mouth
How should dentures be soaked in cleaner?
Once daily, soak according to manufacturers instructions
Don’t soak in alkaline for more than 10 minutes and completely avoid if metal base denture
Thoroughly rinse after soaking
Soak overnight in plain water
How should denture adhesives be used?
Properly follow instructions on the packaging
Only should be used in small amounts
Completely remove adhesive form denture and mouth daily
When to see your dentist?
Once a year for reassessment of fit and health of mouth
