Post Colonial State Flashcards
What is essentialism?
A belief that people have a set of characteristics that make them what they are. Essentially essence comes before existence
What is the post colonial state?
It promoted the post colonial as anti essentialist, and promoted heterogeneity in discussing Africa and is against African sameness, which is a complete alternative to Eurocentric thought.
What is its significance in the 21st century?
Essentially it’s is the question specifically brought up by the Crawford Young reading about if the term post colonial still really exists today?
What else is important about post colonial state?
The fact that it increases that increases allegiance to that sovereign identity and differentiation but still African countries still have temananys of colonialism in their neo patrimonial govts, which begs the question of how much over colonization can they be?
What are the feeding why Crawford is wrong is saying post colonialism is not a thing? In this sense
- They still have the remanants of colonial policy specifically neoptriomonialism Britton and walle
- How is it post colonial if there’s still that type of colonial violence surrounding demarcations made by colonial rulers? With ethnic groups now fighting themselves
Why is the term post colonialism right?
There are promising developments in Africa that do I care a move past the colonial setting:
- Increase in civil society aka Nigeria, Kenya, SA and there is an I teased protection and awareness of civil and political rights that had led to opening up dmecratic spaces and more independent media and more accountability essentially from government although there is still a way to go
- African renaissance: despite recent events there are a ton of African states reinventing themselves, with a new breed of leaders, scruples, environmental concerns some may have met democracy but others come in recognizing the importance of human rights, promoting a market economy and encouraging civil society
