Positive assumption acknowledgement of free will Flashcards
Define the ‘acknowledgement of free will’
It is when individuals choose their own course of action and have responsibility for their behaviour.
Explain what is meant by ‘the acknowledgement of free will’
This assumption believes that humans are self-directive and adaptive; that a good life can be obtained if we use our strengths and virtues to our advantage; and that happiness is not a result of determinism, but a result of recognising and developing our strengths to make our lives better.
Examples for ‘the acknowledgement of free will’
Seligman & Diener (2002) found that participants who had the strongest ties to family and friends reported lower levels of depression and other negative states. This shows that we are in control of our happiness in that we can choose to engage in activities that we know make us happy and which relieve feelings of low mood. Our emotional state is within our control.
