Cognitive assumption internal mental processes Flashcards
Define what are ‘internal mental processes’
Humans are seen as information processers. This focuses on how information received from our senses is processed by the brain and how this influences our behaviour.
Explain what are ‘internal mental processes’
They are Cognitive processes that all work together to enable us to make sense of and respond to the world around us. Cognitive processes include attention (noticing the stimulus), perception (interpreting the stimulus), memory (searching our memory for what the stimulus is based on its perceived factors) and language (using language to name the stimulus). These processes work together to help the individual understand their environment.
Example of ‘internal mental processes’
Our visual perception is an example of a cognitive ability where we use our internal mental processes to make sense of what we are seeing. Visual illusions can ‘trick’ the brain in terms of how we process what we see. Our brain tries to make sense of the stimuli (Illusion) so perceives the stimuli differently based on our existing memories of what we believe it should be.
