Biological approach ‘neurotransmitters’ Flashcards
what are Neurotransmitters?
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that act between neurons within the brain. This allows the brain to process thoughts and memories.
Explain what neurotransmitters are
The chemical messengers passed from the pre-synaptic neuron to the post-synaptic neuron across the synapse
Electrical signals cause neurotransmitters to be released from the pre-synaptic neuron and are diffused across and aborbed by the post synaptic neuron.
The message is then converted back into an electrical message and continues along the neuron. When NTs are released from pre-synaptic vesicles in one neuron and STIMULATE or INHIBIT receptors.
What is an example of neurotransmitters?
An example of a neurotransmitter is is dopamine. This is when there is an excess amount of dopamine that can lead to schizophrenia because of the dopamine receptors firing too often. This can be from the neurons inhibiting dopamine causing it to float around the vesicles, resulting in the development of schizophrenia
