Forms the basis of public opinion.
What is public opinion?
Sum of individual opinions.
What roles do most Texans think ordinary citizens should play in politics?
Very Limited
What is political participation?
Working for a candidate, running for office, displaying a yard sign, or bumper sticker, attending political meetings, and voting.
What are the demographics of the state’s population?
The minority population is the majority.
Has the population of Texas grown?
Growing faster than other states-we gained 2 house seats in the last reappointment based on the 2020 census.
How do Texas political parties operate?
Under title 10 of the election code.
What do county party chairs do?
Maintain headquarters, fund-raise, conduct primary elections, and oversee counting of votes.
Who can join them?
Anyone
Is the state’s political party strong or weak?
They are fairly weak which allows for pressure from special interests.
Why is the state’s political party fairly weak?
Because the parties are divided into permanent and temporary structures.
What is the state executive committee?
Each party operating a primary must have a state executive committee that carries out the business of the party as an organisation across the state-2 members from each senatorial district evenly divided between man and women.
What first signaled a potential shift from 100 years of democratic control in Texas?
When Texas voted for Eisenhower in 1952 presidential election-he was born in TX.
What party is dominate in Texas?
It is mostly a one-party Republican controlled state.
When did the Republican party gain dominance?
1990’s
What factors will contribute to continued party dominance of the Republican party in the state?
The support and vote of Texas’ minority population.

SLIGs protect local governments from state interference.
