Peninsula de Setubal: The Growing Environment , Grapes and Business
- Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild, wet winters
Mountains in the south provide cooler sites at higher altitudes on clay-limestone soils
-Much of the region is flat and sandy, with schist and clay further inland
Two DOCS
Palmela DOC - red wines of 67% Castelao - wines are deep in coluour, full bodied and red bery fruit
Often matured in oak , spice
Concentrated age worthy wines are grown in warm , sandy vineyards on the plains - slopes tend to porduce lighter wines
International varieites are also allowed Cab Sauv, Syrah better on the cooler, limestone and clay sitets
Setubal DOC - sweet, fortified wines from Moscatel
Whoite wines are made from Fernao Pires , Moscatel and ARinto
Wines are good with some very good examples
Production of Palmela DOC ranged from 166,000-222,000 compared to Peninsula de Setubar VR at 217,000-257,000hl
