-wet weather and strong winds
-Clay -limestone soils for lighter , fresher styles
-Serra de Montejunto splits the region in to E and W
Lisboa: Grape Varieties and Winemaking
Red:
Touriga Nacional and Aragonez and historic grape Arinto - highest quality
Also Syrah, Cab Sauv, Pinot Noir, SB and Riesling
**DOC’s Alenquer and Bucelas are the best known, both on the East side of the mountains
full bodied reds in the sheltered location from touriga Nacional and Aragonez **
Wines are good to very good and mid priced
Bucelas -v high acid wines from Arinto - 75% of the blend.

Colares and Carcavelos -smaller DOCS of gret importance have been consumed by Lisbon suburbs
**Colares - cool, foggy coastal climate , ungrafted bush vines on phyloxera free sandy soils - rare- interesting wines with fresh acidity **

- most wine production comes from Lisboa VR - history of inexpensicve wines for sale to Portugese colonies
Nine DOC’s , although most use VR which has more flexibility and is more recoginzed
Quality is imporving with re-structured vineyard and more wines being certified DOC
eg. Quinta de Chocopalha
40% of certified wines are made by Casa Santos Lima - inexpensive and mid priced brands for retaileres and export markets 50%
