Tympanum
The semi-circular or triangular space above a doorway, often filled with sculptural decoration in Romanesque and Gothic churches.
Portal
The grand entrance of a church, often elaborately decorated with sculpture.
Voussoir
A wedge-shaped stone used to construct an arch.
Archivolts
The bands or moldings surrounding the curved edge of an arch, often decorated in Romanesque architecture.
Spandrel
The triangular space between the curve of an arch and the rectangular frame around it.
Jamb
The side posts of a doorway or a window frame.
Colonette
A small, slender column, often used decoratively in Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
Trumeau
The central pillar supporting the tympanum of a large doorway.
Lintel
A horizontal beam spanning the top of a doorway or window, often supporting the wall above.
