What is porphyria?

A group of 7 inherited metabolic disorders (disorders) caused by 7 different faulty genes

What affects do the porphyria have?
A
They have two possible effects
- Acute attacks
- Skin sensitivity in sunlight

What is the commonest acute porphyria?
A
Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP)

Which gender is more likely to have attacks?
A
Women

What are acute attacks caused by?
A
The build-up of ALA and PBG, the raw materials for making ham. ALA and PBG damage the nerves

What are skin problems caused by?
A
A build up of light sensitive porphyrins

How are mild attacks of porphyrins treated?
A
Mild attacks can sometimes be stopped by taking high glucose foods/drinks
