Population Pyramids Flashcards
What are the 3 age categories of a population pyramid
Older adults (+65)
Working adults
Children (-15)
Define dependency load
The percent 0-15 and over 65 (not part of labour force) are the dependency load because they are dependent on others for support
Example a country like Mexico with a high number of children has a high dependency load
How to make a population pyramid (6)
- 2 colours m/f
- five year range labeled
- specific title (year and location)
- label males(left)/ females(right)
- base scale (% it population value in millions
- use ruler and colour nearly
Why are population pyramids important?
Population is fastly rising which can cause problems like pollution, water, resource problems. Using equation can track the future populations using pyramids
What are the 3 types of population pyramids
Expansive, constrictive and stationary population pyramids
Define expansive population pyramids
Shows larger # or % of the population in the younger age groups l, usually with each age group larger in size or proportion then the one before it. Population growth is rapid
Define constrictive population pyramid
Displays a lower # or % of younger people. Population growth is negative
define stationary population pyramid
Displays somewhat equal # or % for almost all age groups (of course smaller in older age groups) population growth is neural or stable
