Equatins Flashcards
Define Demography
The study of human population
Define natural increase
The rate at which the population changes naturally
NI = Births - Deaths
Define net migration
By combing immigration and emigration, you can find the change in population as a result of people moving
NM = Immigration - Emigration
Define population growth
To find the overall change in population you need both natural increase and net migration
PG = NI + NM
Define immigration rate
Immigrant is a person who moves to one country from another
Immigration Rate = (# of immigrants divided by population) X 1000
Define emigration rate
An emigrant is a person who leaves one country to move to another
Emigration Rate = (# of emigrates divided by population) X 1000
Define birth rate
The # of births in a population per year per 1000 people. The # of births doesn’t matter but the relationship between the size of the population does
BR = (# of births divided by population) X 1000
Define death rate
The # of deaths in a population per year per 1000 people
DR = (Deaths divided by population) X 1000
Define population growth rate
The rate at which the population is Growing as a result of natural changes and the movement of people
PGR = NIR + NMR OR (PG divided by population) X 1000
Define doubling time
The length of time for a country’s population to double at a particular population growth rate
The rule of 70 is a simple calculation to estimate doubling time
DT = 70 divided by population growth rate
