96% are immigrants or descended from immigrants only 4% are First Nation, Metis and Inuit
Define pull factors
A reason that makes a particular country seem attractive to potential immigrants
Ex freedom, education, employment, family and environment (climate)
Define push factors
A reason that encourages people to move away from their country
Ex. Poverty, violence, loss of job, war, natural disaster, oppression and fear
What are the 3 categories of immigration
Economic Immigration (permanent residents), economic immigration (temporary residents) and social and humanitarian immigration
Define economic immigration (permanent residents)
Accepted because they can contribute to Canada’s economy
Examples are skilled worker class, skilled trade class, Canadian experience class and start up visa
Define economic immigration (temporary residents) and temporary foreign worker program
Allowed into Canada for 2 reasons to fill labour shortage in certain fields and allow people with extraordinary talents to contribute to Canada’s economy
Temporary foreign worker program grants work permits for temporary foreign workers
Define social and humanitarian immigration
Family class: sponsored by close family members who live in Canada
Refugee class: under international law, all countries have a responsibility to accept legitimate refugees
Refugees are people who move to another country because they fear for their safety in their home country
